AGAVE

2016 and the time has come for a change!
I have been including the Agave in the general index but there are now quite a lot of them.
I started growing Agave in about 1974, when I first got access to a greenhouse. Availability of species has varied decade by decade, and there are still a few things I grew back then that I would like to replace. In the meantime I have grown the genus in a series of waves of enthusiasm. In the intervening low periods I tend to put the plants to one side and it is a testament to their toughness that I have been able to get away with occasional bouts of neglect.
As the millennium changed, I decided I needed to take things a bit more seriously, stop the cycle of growth and neglect, and find somewhere permanent to plant them. Out of that was born the Agave House. It is a very simple structure that serves to deflect winter rain from the plants. Many of the species would be perfectly hardy here if we had dry winters, so that is what I have tried to create.
Once planted out they have grown well. A few have shown they are not frost hardy, but there have been far more successes than failures. Those that have survived are growing rapidly, and will probably start to cause problems before long. I have a vague hope that I can solve each individual issue as it arises and if I can't - well, I'll worry about that when it happens. In the worst case scenario I will get a long handled spade and cut them out by hand.
As I see it, I am happier with a decade of astonishing improbability than a lifetime of stunted plants in pots.
