Agave palmeri

21st January 2007

Another species from Arizona. The northern species have to be cold hardy, but they also experience very dry winters, and the winter wet here often causes problems.

Once again chance plays a part. A local nursery cleared out an overstock of large A. palmeri that had been damaged in the winter. I bought four. Three of them were grouped in the Agave house, one of which failed to recover from the damage. One of them was planted outside in a well drained raised bed, where it sulked, softened, rotted and died.
. The remaining two in the Agave house are growing well. I think it might be a very good thing under cover, but it isn't going to survive outside.
