The species comes from Mexico and Central America where ity is also grown as an ornamental, and occasionally to make merscal.
The variegated form makes a low globe of spiked leaves about four feet wide at maturity. I had one as a teenager that followed me around from
place to place until one day I settled in Cornwall and discovered that it hadn't settled with me. Since then I have wanted to replace it and never
found one for sale. Suddenly this one appeared and I had to have it. It's not rare, its just occasional.
