Zingiber collinsii 'Silver Streaks'

Archive entry 14.10.07

A species discovered in Vietnam in 1980. Silver marked leaves from red stems. The bright red flowering cones produce whitish flowers. I haven't got conditions that are warm enough to keep it growing in the long term.

Tejas Tropicals say (quoted on Plant Lust):

"In my opinion this is the most beautiful ginger in cultivation. The foliage is spectacular with silver bands on the leaves and basal flowers in clusters of orange to red that look like brightly colored hot pokers. Even better its a hardy easy to grow ginger."

Top Tropicals say:

"This species is distributed from southeastern Viet Nam to the south of high central Viet Nam and extends to the eastern parts of Cambodia. Though rather common in southeastern Viet Nam, this species has only recently been described. The species is listed as Vulnerable. "

Vendio say:

" The colorful foliage is spectacular with silver bands on the leaves and brightly colored basal flowers in orange to red that look like clustered hot pokers.
This exciting species was discovered in Vietnam and eventually published as a new species in honor of Mark Collins the collector who discovered it. Endemic in Viet Nam and introduced as a wonderful ginger plant that has 3 foot tall arching stems with several bright silver stripes on each leaf. There are many wonderful gingers with variegated or patterned foliage, however this is one of the most beautiful!"
