Zygopetalum has become a popular genus of orchid for the home grower. To achieve commercial success it needs to be easy to produce, reliable in growth
and tolerant of occasional upsets. To survive the pressures of marketing (boxing, transport, standing around in the dark etc.) it also needs to be tolerant
of accikdental abuse and that can include low temperatures.
I had a whimsical idea therefore that the genus might tolerate the greenhouse or some hybrid greenhouse/windowsill wintering arrangement.
I bought a plant from Wisley and demonstrated that it wasn't so. I had effectively washed my hands of
when I found this variegated sport hidden among a batch of green plants at Lelant Garden Centre. I was persuaded to try again, and because I think
it should be preserved I gave it too a friend with a heated greenhouse before the first winter set in.
