A spectacular variegated form of the species. I have trouble growing the green form, and I have killed the variegated once before, so it is getting a bit more warmth
this year. I got this plant from Aloha Tropicals in California, their catalogue said: "Very similar to its cousin (Zingiber zerumbet 'Awapuhi') in growing habit, but the exception is it's beautiful variegated white striping throughout it's leaves, also producing green cones that turn variegated and red. Grows 4 to 5'. Great for cut flower and foliage!" Gingerwood Nursery say: " To date there is only one variegated cultivar, often known as ‘Darcyi.’ It is not as tall or as vigorous a grower as the standard cultivar common in the US but its foliage is beautiful and it makes the same lovely red cones in late summer. It is cold hardy in Zone 8 but requires some extra protection in the form of mulch and well drained soil. Grows to 3 feet in bright shade to medium sun. Hardy in Zone 8 and above." |
