Zingiber vinosum

A reddish species with clustering shoots. I have been grew it for a few years, but it needs a lot of heat, and it has never been spectacular. I have given a piece to a friend with a tropical house, where it might be spetacular.

I got it from Aloha Tropicals in California. Their catalogue says:

"A gorgeous and eye catching ginger that produces multiple stems that grow 4' to 6' tall, foliage is dark green on top with rich burgundy undersides, inflorescences are burgundy-blackish oblong bract, well suited for medium shade to full sum in landscape or container. Spectacular ginger for beautiful colored foliage."

The species was described in 1997 by Ida Theilade and John Mood. In the abstract they say:

"Recent collections from Sabah and Sarawak have revealed a wide species diversity among the Bornean members of the genus Zingiber. Four previously unknown and one incompletely known species of the genus are presented. Z. vinosum is a lowland species characterized by its burgundy colour of the lower surface of the leaves. "
