A species used medicinally in Asia, bought as Zingiber cassumanar. I have not been able to find out anything more about it, except that the name is slightly dubious, and consequently this
(which I bought as a dry rhizome) may not even be the real, little known thing ! It has been an interesting species with small leaves closely spaced
along the pseudostem. Plants of the World online says: "This name [Z. cassumanar] is a synonym of Zingiber purpureum subsp. purpureum" and adds [under Z. purpureum], "The native range of this subspecies is Arunachal Pradesh to E. India and Myanmar. It is a perennial or rhizomatous geophyte and grows primarily in the wet tropical biome." Although there are cool 'bits' within its natural range, it is a plant of the tropical regions. I wasn't expecting it to grow well in my conditions, this first year growth was a surprise, but I wasn't able to get it through the first winter. The plant has some medicinal uses in Asia. |
