With pink flowered Zephyranthes I am always a little worried about identity (Zephyranthes robusta gets everywhere). This plant derives from
seed collected in Mexico and seems to be the real thing, it has a short style and crocus-like opening flowers, though I would be happier if it had the yellow throat
as described as well (but it is variable). I bought it from Cotswold Garden Flowers and their label says: "Open, up-facing lily/crocus-like pale pinky-purple or white flowers Apr-Jun, 30cm. Hardy in UK but likes well drained soil. Collected dave Lehmiller in Mexico." Paul Christian said on his Rareplants catalogue: "Mexico and possibly Guatemala. Pink with a yellow throat. A white form is known 2n=24 and 48 known but identity of taxa is not easy. Plants in cultivation from one Australian nursery have become widespread and are in fact Habranthus tubispathus" Plant Delights have a cultivar called 'Puerto Pink' of which they say: "Zephyranthes lindleyana 'Puerto Pink' produces lovely pink goblet-shaped flowers atop 8" stems starting in late April (NC) and continuing through May. The incredibly drought-tolerant Zephyranthes lindleyana will go completely dormant in dry weather, only to have the glaucous green leaves return after a rain. Unlike many rain lilies, Zephyranthes lindleyana flowers only in spring, just after Zephyranthes atamasca. Zephyranthes lindleyana 'Puerto Pink' is propagated from our original 1994 collection at 3,800' elevation in Puerto Purificacion, Tamaulipas, Mexico." |
