Zephyranthes 'La Bufa Rosa'

Archive entry 06.09.09

A seed strain, it is assumed to be a natural hybrid, discovered by John Fairey and Carl Schoenfeld in Tamaulipas, Mexico in 1990. A number of variations have been selected out and named, but the parent strain is still quite wonderful.

I got it from Cotswold Garden Flowers and their catalogue entry says:

"Unusually prolific sweetly scented thick-petalled large white flowers look up and fade palest pink, Jul-Sep, grassy leaves, 18cm. Natural Mexican hybrid found at 4000 feet altitude."

There are a number of different spellings circulating for the name. I follow Tony Avent at Plant Delights Nursery because he knows more about the names of Zephyranthes than anybody I know, and he is careful with their proper use. Plant Delights say:

"This naturally-occurring hybrid rain lily was discovered by Yucca Do Nursery in 1990 at 4,000' in Tamaulipas, Mexico. This incredibly prolific-flowering rain lily is smothered with beautiful 2-4" wide, clear pink-to-white with pink blush (color of seedlings varies) flowers from midsummer through early fall. The short, dark green, flat, glossy leaves serve as a nice backdrop to the flowers. You are going to go nuts over this easy-to-grow gem!"

The Pacific Bulb Society say:

"Zephyranthes 'Labuffarosea' (syn. Z. sp. 'Labuffarosa') was found and collected by Carl Schoenfeld (owner of Yucca Do Nursery) and John Fairey (owner of Peckerwood Garden) in the Sierra Chiquita in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico. The large flowers open in the afternoon and are variable from white to pink, also bicolors. Z. drummondii, Z. traubii and an unknown pink Z. species are found growing in the same area and Z. 'Labuffarosea' is suspected to be a natural hybrid of these species."
