I was delighted when I was able to obtain a few of the Indonesian Zepyranthes hybrids raised by Fadjar Marta.
In general they haven't done very well with me. I'm guessing that they would like more heat than I can give them and less wintery winters. 'Java' was particularly disappointing, I waited several years for the first flower and when it came the rightful occupant of the pot had been usurped by Habranthus tubispathus. Some teeth were gnashed that day! It should have a large, well rounded, orange flower shaded with red. Plant Delights say; " I love this rain lily! From the breeding program of Indonesia's Fadjar Marta comes this new early-flowering rain lily. Z. 'Java' forms a nice offsetting clump topped, starting in mid-June (NC) , with stunning, 2.5" wide, orange-brown flowers (RHS 172C), highlighted with a large, bright yellow center. On the second day, the flowers age to an amazing mix of peach and yellow." A note on the Pacific Bulb Society's page says: "Fadjar Marta was a breeder of Zephyranthes hybrids in Indonesia, where the flowers apparently grow very well. He shared these photos of his growing fields, and of some unnamed hybrids he produced. He died in 2020. As you can see, Zephyranthes hybrids come in a broad range of pastel colors, and many recent hybrids have double and striped flowers. Fadjar made a lot of progress with double flowers. He wrote: "As you see in the attached photographs, the pink coloration is most dominant in my double hybrids, although I have got some double hybrids with interesting coloration. I have also achieved triangle shaped double hybrids. Fadjar concentrated on propagating all the double cultivars by bulb chipping and after the chipped bulbs set a lot of bulblets, they were separated to grow into mature bulbs. When they set a lot of flowers, he utilized them for cross breeding." |
