Zephyranthes drummondii

Archive entry 07.07.08

A plant I bought from Cotswold Garden Flowers. I am uncertain about its identity but I think this should have a pure white flower without the red eye.
The label from CGF said:

"Very highly scented stubby white up-facing flowers Aug-Oct."

Plant Delights Nursery offered the plant and said:

"From our 1994 trip into the Mexican Sierra Chiquita Mountains, comes this superb, but rarely offered rain lily. The original bulb was chiseled from a clump growing in a rock crevice at 3000' (#AIM-68). The long, flat, blue-grey leaves can reach up to 2' in length. In July and sporadically throughout the summer, the clumps are topped with afternoon-opening giant 2" pure white flowers, occasionally with a pink edge, but always with a delightful aroma."

Aaron Floden wrote on the Pacific Bulb Society;

"Zephyranthes drummondii should be fully hardy if you get the right forms from south-central Kansas. These tolerate temperatures to -20F. Sadly, I do not grow it from there. I never found it when I looked out of season while looking for other things."

The species description on the Pacific Bulb Society says:

"known by the common name of giant prairie lily, is native to Texas, New Mexico and Mexico and has large, white flowers opening in the late afternoon or evening from spring into summer, sometimes later if the conditions are optimal. Height: to about 20 cm."
