Still with me after all these years. Yucca guatemalensis is the common Yucca grown as a houseplant
and very occasionally this variegated form appears on the market. I bought mine when in the 1970s when I was still at school (I wasn't really one of the cool kids)
and have repeatedly cut the top off and cut the stem into sections so I have several.
It isn't hardy outside but it does well in the conservatory. In an age of micropropagation there are many other variegated clones being produced. In recent years there seem to have been a lot more names than distinct plants but that is always the way. I have always known it as Yucca guatemalensis but most people call it Yucca elephantipes and Plants of the World online says they are both synonyms for Yucca gigantea. Take your pick, the situation was unclear fifty years ago and I'm still no clearer so I'm sticking with the name I know pending a sudden flash of insight. |
