Yucca filifera

A common species from central Mexico which may eventually grow to the size of a small tree. I will have to do some remedial surgical reduction long before that. This is an old seedling that has been knocking around for a couple of decades and is now released into the Agave house.

Urban Jungle say:

"An imposing and spectacular yucca, superficially resembling the Joshua tree. This is surely a rocket amongst other desert-style plants; fast-growing and upright with a massive and tapered trunk. The short and stout leaves are a dark green colour, sometimes edged with creamy, curled fibers, and terminating in a sharp spike. Usually growing tall before flowering with a unique pendulous inflorescence of many creamy white blooms, it develops a branched crown once doing so. Very hardy and easy to grow in pots or in the ground in full sun and free-draining soil.
Height and spread after 4 – 5 years 1.5m x 80cm. Semi mature height and spread after 10 – 11 years 3m x 80cm. Potential height and spread after 25 years 8m x 2m, width is dependent on flowering and subsequent branching."

The Big Plant Nursery say:

"Yucca filifera is a supremely archiectural, deep-green leaved Yucca with sizel-like fringes to the leaf margins. In its native Mexico, Yucca filifera can reach heights of over eight meters, forming wonderful multi-branched specimens. Maybe in time, that will be possible here, but growth generally is fairly slow. Fortunately for us, Yucca filifera seems equaly happy growing in the UK, given perfect draining and a sunny position where it will tolerate winter temperatures down to minus mid teens."
