A prairie perennial from the USA which would generally suggest that it will be too wet here and too mild in winter,
but it grows in wet sites and seems to have adapted to conditions in the herbaceous border. A plant that has always been present in herbaceous borders, without ever being fashionable so very little comment has been made in the press. Beth Chatto Plants and Gardens say: "Stout erect stems, clothed at each node a star-shape of narrow pointed leaves, which are topped with narrow pyramidal spires of tiny shell pink flowers. Excellent contrast in shape to border phlox." Graham Gough wrote in the Journal of the RHS: "In palest pink, Veronicastrum virginicum f. roseum (1.4m / 4.5 ft) is virtually identical to its selection 'Pink Glow' (1.4m / 4.5 ft) and exudes class. It has a shorter counterpart in German nurseryman Ernst Pagel's V,. virginicum 'Erica' (1m / 3ft), a splendid plant for small gardens." |
