A low growing, scrambling species that can make interesting filler between other plants. I grew it from seed for a year but it didn't persist. Plants of the World online says: "The native range of this species is Bolivia to Uruguay. It is a perennial and grows primarily in the subtropical biome. Derry Watkins said in 2016 (JRHS): "With atypical swollen, almost tuberous roots, Verbena rigida is not for a heavy, clay soil, but in drier gardens it can be surprisingly perennial, despite an RHS hardiness rating of H3 (-5deg to 1degC/23-34degF). It can be grown from seed as an annual in colder gardens, but plants will flower for longer where the tubers have been overwintered." Beth Chatto Gardens say: "Neat and low growing with jewel-like colour, intensely vivid violet-purple, very good among silvers. Often used as a bedding plant and reputed to be not very hardy but it will survive in a warm, well-drained soil often shooting from underground runners. Late summer to autumn." |
