The name means "red emperor", this is one of the classic pink flowered cultivars with a dark pink
peduncle and a pink blushed flowers with a pink tinged spur. Most plants are now raised from seed
and the amount of pink in the flower can vary. Discovered in Kochi Prefecture on Shikoku in 1979 and one of the few pink cultivars that do not owe their colour to hybridisation. The stem and root tips are brown. H. Matsuoka writes: "Classical and representative red flower variety. The direct translation is "red emperor". Commonly and traditionally we call this type of flowers "red flower" but actually the petals are almost white, although the spurs and ovaries are surely red. Many mutated (and interesting) varieties by seeding are coming out in front of us. It may be difficult to get the original divisions now." Elite Orchids say: "Elegant Light Purple spikes with color on the spurs and tips of the petals. Plants may develop dark purple/black pigmentation near the leaf axes and growth center under higher light conditions." |
