'Kibana' means "yellow flower" and is not really a cultivar name although it is treated as one in the west.
It encompasses all Vanda falcata forms with yellow flowers, from those that open white and only darken
after several days to those that are yellow on opening. Within the colour group, many cultivars have been named. It has been suggested that the colour was derived from hybridising Vanda falcata with the deep yellow Vanda miniata and then back-crossing over several generations. Vanda 'Kibana' tend to flower earlier in the year than Vanda falcata and have a distinct scent (I can't tell the difference). I am pleased that my 'Kibana' is a good, deep colour.
