Vanda falcata 'Kibana'

'Kibana' means "yellow flower" and is not really a cultivar name although it is treated as one in the west. It encompasses all Vanda falcata forms with yellow flowers, from those that open white and only darken after several days to those that are yellow on opening. Within the colour group, many cultivars have been named.
It has been suggested that the colour was derived from hybridising Vanda falcata with the deep yellow Vanda miniata and then back-crossing over several generations.
Vanda 'Kibana' tend to flower earlier in the year than Vanda falcata and have a distinct scent (I can't tell the difference).
I am pleased that my 'Kibana' is a good, deep colour.

"The last group are the yellow to orange flowered forms. Much controversy has been spun around this group, the issue being are they really . Most growers today agree that no true yellow flowered N. falcata exist, hence all yellow flowered plants are mixed blood - most likely with the genus Ascocentrum, but given the long spurs this plant has, back crossing must have ocurred/ Regardless, growers of fuukiran proudly keep their yellow flowered plants right alongside their other plants and a number of yellow forms have been named and recognised. A commmon name given to any yellow flowered plant is Kibana Furan, simply meaning "yellow flowered wind orchid". These are lovely, yet highly variable plants with flowers ranging from very light yellow to deep yellow-orange."
