Urtica dioica 'Good as Gold'

Archive entry 04.05.08

A very beautiful golden leaved Stinging Nettle discovered by Kevin Swales. I am hoping this will do well for me. I found a pretty white splashed Nettle a few years ago, but was unable to keep it alive for very long.
It has made a fantastic golden splash in the herbaceous border.

I got it from Rosemary Castle at Alternatives Nursery and her catalogue entry says:

"My favourite stinging nettle and a good one for butterflies: its golden foliage is enhanced by red-tinted stems, especially in spring. Viewed close-up, many of the leaves are found to be subtly variegated in green or cream. Pull out the odd green shoot. Can be cut back for fresh golden leaves or left to flower, when it is very elegant. Wee named by Kevin Swales (who discovered it) as it seems to stay as a clump in my garden."
