A common native plant in the south and west that occupies the hedgerows in summer when the bluebells have died down. The greenish flowers have a certain style that makes up for any weedy tendencies. It grows in the garden in the hedges and on bare stony surfaces. I also find it cropping up in tree fern trunks and on one occasion I found it growing on a folded compost bag that I had left outside by mistake. The BSBI say: "A perennial herb of coastal cliffs, walls, roofs, in rock crevices, quarry faces, sandy cliffs and on stony hedgebanks, mainly on damp, shaded acidic substrates though occasionally found on limestone. In Cornwall it has even been seen growing as an epiphyte on the boughs of large trees." Wild Food UK say: "A lovely addition to any salad with its succulent, delicate flavour. Some say a bit like peas although we think it is pleasant but usually quite neutral although from different rocks and walls and times of year they can sometimes be very bitter." |
