A small growing plant from Japan. Mine has quite bright yellow flowers, there are paler forms about. In 2005 Asiatica said in their catalogue: "Rare Japanese species with large, somewhat succulent leaves, green or mottled, with large yellow flowers in fall. Overall probably the moist interesting Japanese species, seldom seen in gardens." Brian Mathew said: "Tricyrtis ohsumiensis is a native of one or two mountains on the Japanese island of Kyushu, on the Osumi peninsular, from which it takes its name. Mr Elick has noted its habitat as being in tall grass and on the edges of clearings. Although rather uncommon in cultivation it does seem to be one of the easier Tricyrtis species, flowering freely and forming dense clumps. Like many of them it scorchesw in strong sunlight but a semi-shaded cool spot, with plenty of moisture available through the summer, suits it well." |
