Tricyrtis nana 'Karasuba'

Archive entry 01.10.06

A new Japanese selection with dark brown leaves. Small growing and requiring a bit of care to grow well, the yellow flowers in late summer are startling. The name means Crow-Leaf in Japanese. It seems to have been distributed originally by Shikoku Gardens in Japan.

In 2005 the Asiatica catalogue said:

"New Japanese selection of a dwarf Japanese toad-lily grows to about 6" tall with yellow flowers at the tip of the stem in early autumn. This selection has dark purple foliage that contrasts with the yellow flowers."

Plant Delights Nursery says:

"Small garden...no problem, we've got small plants. This diminutive toad lily is a unique Japanese selection of the dwarf T. nana. The normal green leaves on this 6" tall, tight clumper have been replaced with glossy black foliage, which is contrasted in September with bright yellow flowers borne in the leaf axils and at the terminal. This is a fascinating little plant."
