Tricyrtis formosana 'Shelleys'

This is a very typical, vigorous form of Tricyrtis formosana. It originated in the garden (Shelleys) of Eliot Hodgkin, and has been named and distributed by Jim and Jenny Archibald. I think it has lusher foliage than many forms.

Jim Archibald said in his 1986 catalogue:

"This is the clone we distributed for many years as "T. macrantha" (a yellow-flowered species in no way like this) because we had received it as such from Eliot Hodgkin, who had brought it back from Japan. If you have bought "T. macrantha" from us over the years, you already have this - change your label! We have sent material up to Brian Mathew to get this all sorted out and he tells us that this is pure T. formosana (showing no trace of hybridisation like some material about in cultivation); as we feel it is a particularly good, vigorous thing, which we have propagated clonally for years, it deserves a clonal name, so what better one than the name of the Hodgkin garden, for so long a repository of so many fascinating plants. Glossy, mottled foliage; flowers densely spotted with maroon in autumn. Arresting. 60cm."
