The commonest of the Toad Lilies in cultivation, from Taiwan. There are a number of slight variations
in circulation. This one is fairly typical of the spotted group, and came originally from Fir Tree
Farm Nursery. Brian Mathew writes: "Tricyrtis formosana is perhaps the best of all the Tricyrtis from a garden point of view. When growing well it will reach a height of nearly a metre with many flowers in branched terminal inflorescences (cymes) opening in long succession; ... In the wild it is often much less floriferous and herbarium specimens show that it may be a slender plant only 30cm in height (1ft) with as few as 3 to 5 flowers. tricyrtis formosana (incliding T. stolonifera) is said to be common on Taiwan throughout the island in moist shady places, from low altitudes up to 3,000m (9850ft); it is also recorded as occurring in China." |
