Strumaria aestivalis

A small species that I was given as a pot of promise and which came up and flowered the following year.

Terry Smale said:

"Usually the earliest strumaria to flower, inflorescences appearing in August. It is endemic to a small area NW of Loeriesfontein where is gets some late summer showers which stiimulate early flowering. This early moisture can be replicated in the greenhouse. Flowers are followed by lorate softly-hairy leaves."

The Pacific Bulb Society say:

"endemic to one locality in the foothills northwest of Loeriesfontein. It is summer-flowering (January in habitat) and responds rapidly to scattered thunder-showers. Flowers are produced prior to the appearance of leaves. It is most similar to Strumaria pubescens in having extremely pubescent leaves."
