Rather a leggy shrublet, but I was delighted by the masses of white flowers produced through the autumn.
A really good new plant to me. Having grown it, I now start to recognise it all around the gardens I visit
, but that is often the way it is for me. It makes thin cover over the ground but the white flowers are one of the delights of autumn. An epiphytic species from Nepal that exudes charm. Plants in cultivation are all thought to derive from an Edward Needham collection in Nepal in 1988. Plants of the World online says: "The native range of this species is Central Nepal. It is a perennial and grows primarily in the subtropical biome." Writing in the Desirable Plants catalogue (2006), Julian Sutton says: "We have to thank Edward Needham for Strobilanthes nutans. It forms a nice weedproof clump in shade under large shrubs. In late summer, hanging inflorescences of pure white flowers appear. Found as an epiphyte in Nepalese cloud forest, it is vigorous and hardy in our coldest, wettest spot; untried in colder parts of the UK." |
