Strobilanthes flexicaulis

Archive entry 01.11.09

I have very little experience of Strobilanthes so I am trying a few. This one has been vigorous in pot, and now filling out well in the garden. Unfortunately it only produces occasional large flowers, so it isn't exactly spectacular.
A species from Taiwan and Japan that I had high hopes for but it has disappeared. I don't know the exact reason but I suspect the dear little rabbits played a part. I will try it again when I have a suitable fence to hide it behind.
In 2025 I was given another plant which I will keep in the greenhouse for a while. The new plant has very much paler flowers than my original one though it may just be low light levels in the late autumn.

Exotic Earth Plants say:

"Strobilanthes flexicaulis is a species of flowering plant in the family Acanthaceae, native to the Tokara Islands of Japan, and Taiwan.
A multi-branched subshrub reaching 1 m (3 ft), it is found at elevations from 200 to 2,300 m (700 to 7,500 ft), typically beside streams in forests."

Plants of the World online says:

"The native range of this species is Japan (Tokara-retto) to Taiwan. It is a subshrub or shrub and grows primarily in the subtropical biome."
