An inelegant flower, the corolla lobes are rolled and undulating and occasional fragments seem to pop up in the centre. However, the colour is amazing and in the darkness
the lack of precision is lost. Dibleys say: "This plant produces a huge head of large deep purple double flowers." The "Bristol's" cultivars were all raised by The Violet Barn in Naples, New York by Dr. Ralph Robinson and his head grower Frank Rouse. On The Violet Barn website they say: "We consider our 'Bristol' streptocarpus hybrids to be superior in may ways to many others. We look for flat, smooth, foliage that is easy to manage. Most don't grow exceptionally large, making them easy to grow on a windowsill or on a light stand. Bloom stems generally are a bit shorter, so that they don't droop or get into the lights on a light stand. Many will have semidouble or double blooms, which means flowers last longer and don't fall from stems when faded. A few are even fragrant!" |
