Streptocarpus 'Black Panther'

The darkest and most beautiful of the single cultivars. Wonderful wonderful wonderful but not frost hardy hardy hardy, even in the greenhouse so now its dead dead ... well, you get the idea.
I bought it from a local garden centre but it was grown by Dibleys as part of their classic varieties range.

In their 1997 catalogue, Dibleys say:

"An American variety with the most deep purple flowers imaginable. Two thin yellow bars emerge from the centre of the throat."

Writing on Instagram (8th April 2024) theplantfinder says:

"It's probably one of the blackest of all the Streptocarpus culivars out there, so dark infact that it's difficult to photograph. Streptocarpus 'Black Panther' was registered in 1999 by the breeder J. Ford but developed as far back as 1982 from self pollinating Streptocarpus 'North Star'.

The Gesneriad Society says in its cultivar register:

"Streptocarpus ’Black Panther’. 1999, IR99573, J. Ford, OH. [1982]. (‘North Star’ x ‘North Star’ selfed). Fertile but reproducible only vegetatively. Rosette. Leaves bullate, dark green, 20 cm long x 7 cm wide, elliptic with crenate margin and acute tip. 4 flowers per peduncle. Corolla salverform, tube 3.5 cm long, limb 5 cm x 5.25 cm, dark purple velvet with light purple throat, two prominent yellow “fangs” in throat, lightly ruffled. First listing 1986, Tiki Nurs. cat."
