Selaginella moellendorfii

A Chinese species that I got from Plant Delights in the USA, where it is well regarded. Seems to be hardy and seems to be more tolerant of dry conditions than many species.

The Plant Delights Catalogue description says:

" This easy-to-grow small Chinese Selaginella moellendorffii has proven to be a reliable performer in our garden as well as a favorite with visitors. Each clump, which resembles a fern run over by a lawn mower, makes a 5" tall x 1' wide woodland groundcover. The delicate ferny green foliage takes on a delightful russet color in winter. Each frond bears tiny plantlets (your new word for the day is "gemmiferous") that drop off and form new colonies where they land...great for a difficult site in the woodland garden!"

Plants of the World online says:

"The native range of this species is Indo-China to Nansei-shoto and Philippines. It is a rhizomatous geophyte or epiphyte and grows primarily in the subtropical biome."

Garrie Landry says on his pyrrosia.com website:

"Selaginella moellendorffii, is a very common plant Selaginella from Asia. It has been one of the most important species in the spikemoss group to be used for genetic studies. It has one of the smallest chromosome number of any plant species known.
This is a very attractive small Selaginella and is extremely cold hardy. While it has a very delicate appearance, it is easy to grow and one will volunteer in many other pots of plants. It produces asexual gemmae that spread from pot to pot and before you know it you have lots of this plant.
Easy to grow by stem divisions and rooted leaf cuttings. Or just place a plant near other plants and what it appear in their pots."
