Prunus incisa 'Oshidori'

25th March 2012 29th March 2012
A small tree with pale pink double flowers. Mine is still tiny but already it is showing the longer twigs that will give it enhanced elegance as a tree and has led to suggestions of hybridity.
Introduced from Japan, where it was discovered in a farmers garden in Gotemba City. I discovered from the Johnstown Garden Centre websire:

"The name in Japanese means "Mandarin Ducks", a reference to matrimonial loyalty, alluding to the fact that many flowers have 2 pistils. (i.e. a loyal pair)."

Given an Award of Garden Merit by the RHS in 2012. In the write-up the forum panel said:

"Distinct double flowers. this tree has the longest flowering time."
