Plantago lanceolata 'Golden Spears'

7th June 2009 10th April 2009 26th February 2010 13th March 2011
An odd form of Plantain, the new growth is golden but it rapidly turns green and for most of the season it looks like an ordinary weed. Dull and delightful. This shows it at it's golden spearing best. I am inclined to harden my heart and learn to live without it having spent several years making quite sure it doesn't set any seed. I'm not sure if I want one, I am certain I don't want a hundred.

I bought it from Beeches Nursery in Essex. Their label says:

"Although the sepecies ia a rather pernicious weed, in spring this provides an attractive rosette of narrow leathery, deeply veined burnished gold leaves. By summer they have returned to green. Good in dry shade. Remove flowers before seeding (7-8). 30cm."
