Pieris japonica 'Debutante'

18th April 2014

In the 1980's I grew a number of Pieris cultivars for the first time and slowly became very confused. The situation wasn't helped by the frequency with which they were moved around the garden as I changed my mind. Eventually I lost track of them. I don't seem to have an adult specimen of 'Debutante' in the garden that dates from those times, so when I saw a young one for sale I bought it.
In 1970 Robert and Jelena de Belder collected seed of P. japonica on Mount Miyanoura on Yakushima. They were careful to collect seed from the shortest parents. P. japonica 'Debutante' was raised from this seed at the Boskoop Research Station in 1983.
