Phlox subulata 'McDaniel's Cushion'

1st May 2016

A bright pink alpine Phlox from the central and eastern states of the USA. In 1993 the RHS gave it an award of merit, they were so impressed. There doesn't seem to be a record of what impressed them. I like to think that someone sat on a flowering cushion inadvertantly and was impressed by the unspikiness of the needle shaped leaves. By jove, that plant deserves an Award of Merit!
There does not seem to be any further information about the plant. Small Phlox are too insignificant even for the infinite internet. It doesn't get a mention in the RHS 1951 'Dictionary of Gardening' (you know, the big multi-volume green one). Bressingham Gardens listed it for the first time in their 1984 catalogue (as 'Daniels Cushion'). Somewhere inbetween a tiny birth went unrecorded.
