Phlomis samia

1st July 2021

Phlomis samia is one of the herbaceous members of the genus producing good tufts of evergreen leaves through the winter and spring. It follows them with long stems of dusty-pink flowers in high summer. It grows across the Eastern Mediterranean region, from the Balkan Peninsula to south Turkey. It is similar to the spring flowering P. russeliana but seems to prefer more heat and sunshine to prosper.
I bought mine from Brighton Plants, who seemed surprised that anyone wanted anything so common. Climate changes everything. In my moderate, wet climate I have planted it at the foot of a south wall to keep it safe. In the last couple of years it has grown well so I will try it in a new location - positions on the south wall are very precious.
