Phlebodium pseudaureumaureum 'Blue Star'

25th February 2016

A magnificent large fern, on the borderline of hardy if it is dry. I have never seen a good one outside but it can be magnificent in a cold greenhouse.
It has a complex naming history, it is being distributed as Phlebodium aureum 'Blue Star' but as it matures it appears, from the pattern of sori on the underside of the frond, to be P. pseudaureum. 'Blue Star' is being microprapagated in vast numbers but I can't find a source for the name, or a reason that it is distinct from the species.
Regardless of its origin, it is a magnificent thing. It grows well in a very large pot but always seems to be a little lop-sided. Perhaps a hand-made pot with character is called for!
