When I got it, it was called Machilus but it has been returned to Persea recently. One of the hardiest of the relatives of the Avocado pear. Shiny evergreen foliage but I have never seen it fruit anywhere.
In spite of all warnings about its dubious hardiness, I have never seen the leaves damaged in winter, and this snowfall didn't upset it for a moment.
Originally from central and south-west china, collected by both Forrest and Wilson a century or more ago. My plant came from Michael Snellgrove at Trewidden Nursery. He raised a batch from seed, but I have no idea where he got the seed from. My plant is broader leaved than the plant at Wakehurst Place.
