Papaver dubium

11th September 2019

The new herbaceous border is a flat platform that was cut from the hillside with a mechanical digger. At the time I had intended to use it as a flat grassy area in the middle of the garden, so the soil and rock were allowed to mix. Shortly after, I decided that I wanted a new border and the mixture of soil and large rocks has been difficult to work. However it has thrown up an interesting collection of annuals. Papaver dubium has been one of them. It is an uncommon native in the area, I usually see it growing in cracks in the pavement, so it was a surprise to find it in disturbed ground in the middle of the garden. The soil where it was growing was last turned over in 1983.
