For a number of years I have been planting the new herbaceous border with peonies whenever the opportunity arises. They enjoy the sunshine and the maintenance regime, they tolerate the stony soil.
Recently I have planted some roots of 'Pink Hawaiian Coral' partly because it is very beautiful but mmostly because it has been very cheap as a dry root in spring through one of the supermarkets (Morrisons).
Establishment hasn't been great but perhaps I will pot some up next spring and get them going in pots before I plant them out. Those that established in the border have performed really well. It is a herbaceous hybrid peony raised by R. G.Klehm in Illinois and released in 1981. The American Peony Society register says: "semi-double hybrid; parentage, Charlie’s White x Otto Frobel; first bloomed 1972. Pink coral, semi-double, good substance, stamens, pollen, fragrant, no seeds, good amount of bloom; 36-inch height, early, good foliage, excellent stem strength. Cupped and rounded double and triple row of guard petals holding an attractive coral and pinkish array of petals. The semi-double blooms are especially becoming with their golden stamens. Seedling # F7. Awarded the American Peony Society’s Gold Medal in 2000. Recipient of the Award of Landscape Merit for superior landscape qualities – 2009." |
