Pachira aquatica

17th July 2009

Over the last decade or so this has become a significant houseplant on the market. For a long time I have paid it scant notice because it is usually presented as a novelty with plaited stems and I have assumed that it is just a fast growing sub-tropical tree made into a cheap gimmick. In recent years it has started to appear in boxes of mixed foliage plants in its own right, and it has attracted my attention. One of the requirements of a new plant grown as a foliage pot plant is that it should be tough.
Unfortunately it has defoliated during the winter in the conservatory and I don't think it is going to make it.
