The Yunnan Banana was first described in 2005. In habitat in Yunnan it grows in the shade of tropical montane forest (Wikipedia). Light levels are
lower here, it does well in the open. The variety M. y. var. yongpingensis is only known from a cultivated population growing close to the border
with Burma. It was described in 2008.

A couple of years ago I planted a short section of hedge with offsets and I have been very pleased with the result.
