Hoya are delightful, it is unquestionable. They are also rather tropical, with possibly a few strange exceptions. I have just had a moment of weakness when faced with
H. 'Mathilde Splash' and there, right beside it on the nursery bench, was H. krohniana 'Eskimo'. They look so similar, surely they must be equally tolerant.
Why would you call a plant 'Eskimo' if it won't take a bit of cold? Unfortunately Plants of the World online disabused me of my delusion: "The native range of this species is Philippines. It grows primarily in the wet tropical biome." There is a chance that it comes from high altitude in the Philippines, a thin sliver of hope to cling to blindly. The omens aren't looking good. It will go into the conservatory and it might make it through to spring. It's a reckless chance but it is difficult to be much more joyfully reckless with £6.99 (and I have tried). |
