Ficinia truncata 'Ice Crystal'

25th August 2016

A remarkable little grass (sedge) that has appeared on the market recently. I couldn't work out what it was when I first saw it, and it took a while to recognise it as a "grass". This cultivar seems indistinguishable from the species, though in Cape Province plants are said to have yellower leaves and this one may have been selected for the striking contrast with the silvery margins. It is a species from southern Africa and it probably isn't very hardy. I divided mine into a few small pieces in spring and they have had a hard time establishing. In future I will probably wait until summer so that they have some warmth to push them on.
