Epimedium grandiflorum 'Crimson Queen'

Archive entry 29.03.09

Epimedium grandiflorum is a spectacular large flowered species found throughout Japan, and into North Korea and southern China. It is vary variable in colour, and numerous cultivars have been named.

New introductions from China, new cultivars from Japanese growers and new European and American seedlings are adding to the available plants at a steady rate. It can be difficult to keep up.

'Crimson Queen' is an excellent deep red flowered form. The flowers are complimented by the pale coppery growth in spring. There is some question that this may be the same thing as 'Rose Queen'. In my plants, 'Crimson Queen' is distinctly redder, compared with the slightly lilac red shade of 'Rose Queen', but that conclusion is founded on the assumption that both of my plants are correctly named, which given that current state of confusion in the commercial world, cannot be relied upon!
