Ensete 'Tandarra Red'

1st June 2006

A spectacular banana for foliage effect. It seems to overwinter in the conservatory rather better than the green leaved form. I have seen it overwinter successfully outside a few miles further south and west, but I think it is still beyond me here.
Raised by TerraNova Nurseries in Oregon. Their desription says:

This is one dramatic foliage plant with huge, waxy fronds of reddish-purple tones superimposed over deep green… similar to Ensete 'Maurellii', but with more contrasting leaf and vein color. Use this bold banana for an exotic, tropical look.

They suggest it for use in containers with high heat and humidity.
It made a magnificent plant for a single summer but it was too fragile to come through the winter even in the greenhouse.
