Edgeworthia chrysantha

20th March 2009

I have been wanting to grow Edgeworthia for years, so when I cleared some overgrown space it was at the top of the list of things to plant. I was delighted when it flowered, but I think the bright yellow flowers alerted the local rabbit population to its presence, because they have now eaten it down almost to ground level (despite a substantial barricade erected to deter them). I still hope for some regrowth from the base but it might be one I put down to experience.

This was certainly the point of no return!
Although it "has not proved hardy at Kew" (Trees and Shrubs online) the situation does not seem to be that simple. It grows well around the southern half of the country when protected by trees. Microclimate seems to be very important , and mature specimens at Kew suggest that the comment by Bean was a litle premature.
