Dendrobium kingianum Variegated

18th March 2012

It could be argued that Dendrobium kingianum is hardy enough to be worth growing in a greenhouse without heat, and therefore that it was worth collecting together the various forms that are in cultivation. In addition this variegated form is very distinctive and decorative so worth having.
Unfortunately, variegated plants are commonly less hardy than the green leaved forms. This plant has almost no green in the leaf in the first season and it is unlikely that it will be hardy enough to survive. I think it is beautiful, and I couldn't resist it but this could well be the best it ever looks.

Sadly although it was spectacular it was not very robust. I bought it from Hsiang Yu Orchid Nursery in Taiwan at an RHS Orchid Show and I may perhaps be able to replace it one day (working on the principle that I am becoming less dendrobicidal with every year).
