5th March 2006

The first time I ran across Crocus tommasinianus it was growing in dense carpets under the shade of some cherry trees, and I have been trying to replicate the effect ever since. So far, I have failed to get the plants to seed effectively, though the individual corms increase slowly. I should really buy some handfuls of new corms every year, but they are so tiresome to plant one at a time.
During the ten days or so that they are in flower, they have occasional moments of delight in the sunshine, but you have to be in the right place at the right time.

Twenty years ago I planted some spare bulbs out around the garden, and from time to time a flower pops up!

I don't get seedlings, but I do get survival (after a fashion). It's enough to provide some unexpected excitement at the start of spring.
