Astilboides tabularis

11th July 2014

A magnificent bold leaved perennial for a moist spot. I have ignored it for many years because I have got used to seeing it looking rather sad crammed into some shady nook or other. Last summer I saw it given pride of place in a large border at Savill Gardens with leaves nearly three feet wide making glorious circles under the trees in the damp soil (Savill Garden has a famously high water table).
Suddenly I had to have it, and this was the first chance I got. Flowering in a pot at present, but I have a plan to get it out at the 'exotic' end of the herbaceous border.
