Habranthus martinezii Habranthus martinezii .
Habranthus are wonderful things. I sowed the seed in june last year, and the first flower has just opened. This doesn't have the deeper purple throat it is supposed to, so the name is open to correction.Habranthus can be a bit shag-happy, so it may not have the parents it pretends to.

Aspidistra grandiflora Aspidistra grandiflora .
I knew that this was going to be spectacular in flower because I have seen the pictures, but I was not really prepared for these giant cartwheels. It is in a six inch pot in case you wanted a scale. Introduced from Vietnam by Barry Yinger at Asiatica, if you have seen the picture of me jumping for joy in front of a banana plant, it is because I had just received this plant in a parcel!

Epiphyllum 'Groves White' Epiphyllum 'Groves White' .
The second of the weeks giant spiky flowers was this exuberant Epiphyllum. I don't know the real name yet - it came from Groves in Bridport , and it is white. It may not be very original, but it will work until I have something better! I have been watching the bud get bigger and bigger, and was out there at midnight last night to get pictures, because so many of these giant flowered forms are night blooming and are gone by dawn, but I got lucky and this one was still there this morning, so I have been able to get decent pictures. The midnight snaps were interesting but they look a bit like a radioactive spider that has crept into a telescope.


(Three years later I can tell you that this is Epiphyllum x cooperi.)
